The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max tested 3D facial recognition under the screen and adopted a single-hole screen form factor. It also revealed that the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air will continue to be equipped with pill-shaped screens.
As we all know, Apple started the era of notch screens with the iPhone X. Apple built the TrueDepth camera system into the notch to achieve 3D facial recognition. The system contains multiple precision components, including an infrared lens, a light-flooding sensor, a distance sensor, an ambient light sensor, and a dot projector.
And in the iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple upgraded from a notch screen to a pill screen, and the area of the hole was further reduced. Apple's next goal is to place the Face ID system under the screen and leave only the front camera on the front.
This means that the iPhone 18 Pro series has officially entered the era of single-hole screens and is now in line with the mainstream Android screen format. It should be noted that the Android camp generally adopts a single-hole + screen fingerprint recognition solution, while the iPhone adopts an under-screen 3D face recognition solution and does not support screen fingerprints.
